Hydrant Heroes
Calling all civic minded people. In the winter, when the white stuff regularly buries our nice,
red fire hydrants, we plead with folks to dig
out (or snowblow) their local fire hydrant. Five minutes of time and effort
can help ensure we have water available when we need it. The five minutes
it would take us to dig out the hydrant, in the event of a structure fire, could
make the difference in saving or losing your home.
We have over 150 fire hydrants we dig out after
every storm. As you might guess, this can take quite a while. Until they
get dug out, we don’t have any water available to fight a fire.
Something to think about - When you finish clearing
your driveway, take your blower and a shovel to your nearest
hydrant. Hit the berm with the blower and use the shovel to clear around the
hydrant. Work with your neighbor and take turns shoveling after the storms. Or,
recruit the neighborhood dogs to help dig, after all, they need a hydrant too!
I realize we’re all busy people, but if we all pitch
in to help we can make our community a safer place in which to live. Fire can
occur at any time. With everyone’s efforts, we can have water available to us
when we need it most. Thank You!
